Walk Like Christ

Walk Like Christ
September 30, 2020 by Chaffawn Smith

Examine Jesus’s behavior. If we are to become more like Him we must know how He lived. Paul wrote, “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5)”.

Jesus stressed the importance of giving: “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked (Luke 12:48).”

Records for this past month are indicating that 50% of students in South Seattle struggle to get online or even participate in school during this pandemic. After this was brought to our attention, we wanted to think fast and accurately for our students and how we can help them.

To help provide academic support for them, we will start having an open space at least twice a week where they can log in to school, receive tutoring, and a balanced meal. Also, we will be supporting local schools that are passing out meals and trying to help students who do not have access to a balanced meal. With the help of Emerald City Bible Fellowship, our doors will be open for 15 students from 8am to 4pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays to care for them. The support of the church and the community is the only way we will be able to manage the hardship of this pandemic.

After school, students will be able to receive tutoring in subjects where they are struggling and also be involved with enrichment programming. We’ll be utilizing the recording studio and dance studio to give them something extra to do outside of school.

Once a week, we’ll meet for small groups that will allow the students to grow spiritually. This will consist of a discipleship program that will allow them to meet with other students and gain spiritual guidance in the midst of this pandemic.

I am blessed with the opportunity to be like Jesus, shine like no other, love like no other, give like no other. This is the time to be selfless and understand there is no way we can save this world without showing grace and being available mentally and spiritually. I’m able to love them and also see them work through conflict within the group. The growth of these ladies is phenomenal. They will be able to share what God is doing in their lives at our virtual banquet on October 30th.

The five girls I have been working with all summer continue to impress me. They are showing so much growth, not only in the ministry, but their own lives. I have noticed some that normally do not do well in school are excited to show me they are making A’s with their grades.

PRAY

  • Pray for the 50% of our students that are not going to school and needing help academically.
  • Pray for volunteers.
  • Pray for our us as we minister and that we will remain healthy and safe but also hands on in this dark time.
